2nd Year Confirmation Program Description

Tuesdays 6:45-8:30pm, WEEKLY

Program Goals

Saint Julia’s Confirmation preparation program is designed to help our young parish members come to a deeper understanding of how the Holy Spirit works in their lives and in the life of the Church.  The two-year program teaches our candidates how to interact with that Spirit to lead a life that will draw them into a closer relationship with our Lord Jesus.

It is expected that candidates be active members of our parish community.  It is required to attend Mass every Sunday and Holy days.  It is important to participate in our parish’s Sacramental life; it is recommended that candidates receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation frequently.

Confirmation Class

Candidates will need to attend each class.  These sessions are important to the candidates’ spiritual growth and development; therefore, students may not have more than 3 unexcused absences.  If a candidate has more than three unexcused absences, they will have to repeat the class next year.  If a student misses class, they will need to provide a note from a parent explaining the absence.  The student will submit a one-page essay on the topic discussed on the night missed.

Class Schedule

Classes will be held every Tuesday, from 6:45pm-8:30pm, unless otherwise noted.  Parents are to sign in their child when dropping off and sign out when picking up.

Candidates must participate in two retreats; dates will be provided at a later time.  This will allow candidates the opportunity to spend time in spiritual reflection and community building with other young members in the program.  Please understand that there will not be alternative dates for the retreat and that it is required for ALL candidates to attend.

Confirmation Saints

Each Candidate is encouraged to select a Confirmation saint.  Ideally, they should choose a saint they can relate to and will pray to for the rest of their life.  During the Sacrament, the Candidate will take their saint’s name as their Confirmation name.

Each Candidate is asked to complete a short description on who their Confirmation saint is and why they chose him or her.

Every candidate for Confirmation must select a Sponsor who is a fully initiated Catholic having

received Baptism, Reconciliation, Eucharist, Confirmation and (if married) Catholic marriage.

Sponsors also must have an active faith life. They must attend Mass every Sunday and

participate frequently in Reconciliation. Sponsors should have the desire to share their faith with the person whom they are sponsoring. Parents may not be Sponsors for their own children. Ideally the Sponsor would be someone local to the area. It is expected that the Sponsor attend Confirmation rehearsal.

Mass Confirmation

The program culminates with the celebration of the Sacrament of Confirmation.  You will be informed of the date later in the year.

Attire for the Mass:  Young Men:  dress pants, dress shirt, tie and dress shoes (no tennis shoes).   Young Women: skirt or dress coming to the knee, at least.  No bare shoulders.  Dress shoes (no flipflops).

Parent Involvement

Parents are the primary educators of their children in the faith.  We encourage parents and teens to have conversations about faith with one another.  To help facilitate these discussions we have provided a copy of the scheduled topics to each candidate to share with their parents.
